Snakes and Ladders is a classic board game introduced to Europe in the nineteenth century originating from India. If you don’t know the game, players roll the dice to move their pieces around the numbered board with the goal of being the first to reach the last square. What mixes up the action is landing on a ladder, moving your pawn over a number of squares, while landing on a snake pushes you back. It is a game that is played all over the world and has appeared in a slot or two in the past. This incarnation of the popular game comes from Pragmatic Play and partner Reel Kingdom in a slot titled Snakes And Ladders Megadice which gives players the chance to win cash from the actual Snakes and Ladders board during its bonus rounds.
The base game is played on a 5×3 game grid, with 10 fixed paylines. There’s a touch of retro 8-bit gaming going on, made up by the font used for the low-paying symbols and in-game messages, as well as some graphics in general. Not surprisingly, Reel Kingdom refuses to stick to one genre or approach, resulting in a visual clash. It looks like a gel with the fact that Snakes and Ladders is an old board game, but it also looks out of date. Overall, initial impressions didn’t blow us away, but others might appreciate the eccentric potpourri.
Due to the up and down nature of Snakes and Ladders Megadice, one minute you win, the next the bad luck snake will knock you back. A few spins later, the ladder of fortune pushes you into a winning position. Such fluid gameplay has been matched against a highly volatile mathematical model for the slot version. The default RTP is very solid at 96.68%, while the potential isn’t bad either. Players can use any device to tackle the classic game, choosing bets that range from IDR 250 to a maximum of IDR 15,000,000.
The symbols have a sense of randomness to them, which isn’t out of character for the Reel Kingdom. The low payout is 10 to an 8-bit Ace-style card royal, paying 5-10 times the stake for a five-of-a-kind hit. Highs consist of ladders, snakes, bananas and King Gorillas, where a full line of five is worth a payout of 15-50x the stake. Even better, the Wild Dice symbol pays out at most at 500x the bet if you hit five along the payline. In addition to changing pay symbols, the Wild Dice lands with 1, 2, or 3 dots on it, just like a regular dice. The number of dots represents a win multiplier of x1, x2, or x3.
Snakes and Ladders Megadice Slot Bonus Features
Above the slot reels you will see that there are snakes in 11 separate sections. Each time a dice symbol lands on the reels, the number of dots on it will move you to the appropriate number of positions along the snake. Once you reach the snake’s final position, the bonus feature will be triggered and 12 rolls of the dice will be awarded. Furthermore, if along the way you happen to land on the 4th position correctly, a random number of reels between 2 – 5 will be added to the bonus game at the start of the game.
Snake & Ladder Board Bonus
This is triggered by filling in the snake bonus symbol or landing 3 on the reels. If filling a snake activates a spin, you get 12 rolls of the dice plus a retrigger up to a maximum of 17. If activated by a bonus symbol, then 3, 4, or 5 trigger bonus symbols award 12, 14, or 16 rolls of the dice, respectively.
Bonus is played on a 12×12, 144 spaced snake and ladder board. Players are represented by a gorilla head token starting from square number one. One each spin, two dice are rolled, and the token moves the applicable number of squares. Empty box or display one of these:
- Money Rewards – 4x wins to 100x the bet added to the total spin win.
- Multiplier – the value of the multiplier is applied to the total wins accumulated up to that point.
- Ladder – moves the player from a lower square to a higher square.
- Snake – moves the payer from the higher box to the lower box.
- Banana – adds a random Money Award to the grid and removes other Banana symbols.
- Skyscraper – appears randomly in any square. If it lands on it moves the player to a higher random position.
The bonus game ends when no more dice are played or when the token reaches the last square. If the latter case, then the round ends, but the player has a chance to re-trigger. Two dice are rolled, and if the result is not a double, the bonus round will be re-triggered. In addition, the Snakes and Ladders Board Bonus has a guaranteed win bet. If the round ends and the total win is less than 20x the bet, the player is taken to Rage Mode. When this happens, the gorilla token moves to the last square collecting all the rewards along the way.
The word iconic is of course overused in modern parlance, but when it comes to a board game that has remained popular throughout the 100s, it’s only natural that snakes and ladders are given that title. This is not to say that turning it into an online slot will guarantee its success, but I must say that I am very impressed with Pragmatic Play and how they have made this an interesting, and more importantly, fun to play slot.
Granted this game may not be to everyone’s liking, but I think it’s a refreshing slot to play and a very entertaining concept overall. Why not see what you think of it and try the great demo game above, it might just become your new favorite Pragmatic slot.
